Rebel Riders

Indonesia Are they rule-breakers or are they free? Freedom for these riders comes in an unlikely form, the Vespa. Equipped with only their imagination, everything from plastic bottles to tree stumps is fair game to customize their vehicles, transforming them into the gnarliest rides with enough character to put motorbikes to shame. In Indonesia, these vehicles mean more than just freedom of expression – for these riders, this is about liberation of the soul. Their families and communities don't get it, so they become outcasts and rebels. But that doesn't matter anymore; they've created inner circles with a bond and passion so deep, they feel like family. And they welcome the side-eyes: to these riders, strange looks and attention feel like being famous.

A Portrait of a Fisherwoman

A world without women is chaos. In the small, fading Japanese town of Kumano, economic prospects are low. This makes fishing, one of the few remaining industries, crucial to sustain. Regardless of gender. Rimi Tanaka is one of the sole fisherwomen who recognizes this need. Raised in Kumano, she's been knocked down for her pursuing her career and passion because of the cultural beliefs held by older generations. They don't believe women can fish. Rimi Tanaka wants to change that, and is amongst the first to break down this barrier in her town, making the way for more women to follow in her wake.

Welcome to Wild Ball, an underground Chinese basketball league where the rules are the same, but the intensity is turnt up. “Foreign Players in Wild Ball“ follows Black athletes who come to China for better pay, a better life, and to pursue their passion for basketball. The cultural crossover between athletes-for-hire and Chinese fans is wildly unique and you can't feel it anywhere else.

As LGBTQ+ communities around the world attempt greater inclusion, Asian drag performers in Vancouver are making strides to carve out their own space that authentically celebrates their heritage and queerness. “Yellow Peril: Queer Destiny” is a 2019 documentary that celebrates and explores the nuances of queer Chinese Diasporic identity. The doc follows several Vancouver drag performers as they build an inclusive future by exploring queerness in Chinese culture.

The Oldest Japanese American Business is a Mochi Store Called Fugetsu-Do

"Mixed inside are stories of joy and pain, tradition and racism, legacy and loss. In this intimate portrait of a sweet shop that has become a memory bank for the Japanese-American community, it's clear that the stories that line its walls could not be more relevant in today's America." The Kito family has been running Fugetsu-Do for the last four generations, and their confectionary store has been feeding the Little Tokyo LA area since 1903. The documentary follows Brian Kito and shares his family's multi-generational Japanese American experience.
